Ouarzazate Solar Power Station bets big on XMV 660

News

The first phase of the Ouarzazate Solar Power Station is the construction of a solar thermal power plant with cylinder-parabolic technology from 125 to 160MW power and an energy storage capacity of at least 3 hours.

Power Electronics will supply 9 XMV660 medium voltage variable speed drives, 6.6kV with redundant cooling system, that will generate a total amount of 22.5MW. 6 of these units will feed the main pumps of HTF, the fluid that transmits the heat to water to produce steam that moves the turbines. The other 3 units will feed the feedwater pumps.

Once the project is totally completed, Ouarzazate Solar Power Station will be one of the biggest in the world, with 500MW of installed power, able to provide the same energy a city of 1.5 million people requires.

In its first phase, 110.000 tons of CO2 will be saved each year, while it will help to the energy security of Morocco, the job creation and the development of an integrated system of local industry. The project is the first one of the Solar Plan of Morocco and the biggest one of the Mediterranean Solar Plan, with the aim to develop 20GW of renewable energy until 2020.
