Freescale Streamline Motor Control and Digital Power Conversion Applications

News

Building on its portfolio of ARM-based microcontrollers (MCUs), Freescale Semiconductor has announced the lead families of the new Kinetis V series, optimised for motor control and digital power conversion applications.

To complement the Kinetis V series, Freescale also announced the Kinetis Motor Suite, a bundled enablement tool that's aim is to help maximise motor efficiency while reducing development cost and time to market.

Modern sensored and sensorless motor control is demanding on the MCU and requires precise speed and position measurement in parallel with general application task processing. The MCU must be able to support a range of control algorithms "“ from entry level BLDC to advanced PMSM and ACIM control loops "“ as well as offer high speed/resolution ADCs and PWMs for fast, accurate signal capture and response. Developers must also have access to intuitive software tools that allow them to create, tune and implement their control algorithms quickly and efficiently.

The company says that the Kinetis V series' fast signal acquisition and processing capabilities, combined with the Kinetis Motor Suite, provide a unified hardware and software platform for developing scalable, cost-effective motor control systems.

"With Freescale's more than 20 years of motor control processor expertise, and our exceptionally strong reputation in these markets, motor control and digital power were the logical next steps for the Kinetis roadmap," said Geoff Lees, senior vice president and general manager for Freescale's Microcontroller business. "Kinetis V series' excellent price/performance ratio, tailored peripheral set and bundled Kinetis Motor Suite allow developers to create highly efficient designs faster and easier than ever before."
