SiC and GaN power semiconductors growing at 63 percent CAGR
The market for SiC and GaN power semiconductors is expected to grow at 63 percent CAGR between 2011 and 2017, reaching around $500 million, according to The Information Network, a US market research company.
These next generation power devices currently represent a market of $150 million. The silicon power semiconductor market is worth $14 billion.
"The commercial battle for next-generation power semiconductors is evolving. As a result, many semiconductor manufacturers are attempting to enter the market," says Robert Castellano, president of The Information Network.
"We see insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) and power MOSFET as the main growth drivers," says Castellano, "we look for strongest growth from IGBTs, although power MOSFETs had the largest market share in 2013 due to fast switching speed, near-perfect gate impedance, excellent stability, and a relatively low on-state resistance."
