CPI debuts GaN buck upconverter for satcoms

100 watt GaN BUC is nearly twice as power efficient as its GaAs counterparts

The Satcom Products group of Communications & Power Industries (CPI) is introducing a new 100 watt C-Band GaN-based solid state block upconverter (BUC) at the 2014 IBC Conference and Exhibition, held at the RAI Convention Center in Amsterdam, Netherlands from 11th to 16th September.

The new BUC augments CPI's extensive selection of solid state GaN and GaAs products in C-, X-, Ku- and Ka-band. The 100 watt GaN BUC is nearly twice as power efficient as its GaAs counterparts, features a user-selectable LO frequency for improved operating flexibility, and complements our existing Ku-band and X-band GaN BUCs, according to the company.

"CPI's new 100 watt BUC is ideal for satellite uplinks where compact size, light weight and low thermal dissipation are critical factors in overall system design, such as in maritime, SATCOM-On-The-Move (SOTM), and land-based small terminal and mobile SATCOM applications" said Colin Eastment, vice president of business development for CPI Satcom Products. "With its light weight and small size, CPI's 100 watt C-band GaN BUC is a great solution for increasingly demanding requirements."
