SPIE picked by UK Power Networks for electricity infrastructure project

News

SPIE UK has been awarded a significant Wood Pole Overhead Line framework by UK Power Networks. One of six contractors selected by UK Power Networks to refurbish and upgrade electrical infrastructure across East Anglia and South East England, the term of the framework is initially two years with a four plus two-year extension.

SPIE's role forms part of a £920 million investment project by UK Power Networks. In its first year, SPIE will be stationed in the East of England, outside of Colchester, where it will manage the design and planning of projects associated with the overhead distribution system.

SPIE will focus on wooden poles supporting cables operating from 230 Volts up to, and including 132,000 Volts, as part of UK Power Networks' work to keep the lights on for 3.5million homes and businesses across the East of England. Services will include the replacement, refurbishment and construction of overhead lines, as well as pole changes, inspections and terminations. SPIE will also be called upon to support UK Power Networks' storm response team throughout the year.

Brian Stratton, Head of Distribution Capital Delivery at UK Power Networks says: "We consider that the skills and experience required to deliver this scheme are met by SPIE. They are as committed as we are to improve the performance of our electricity network and have the added capability to provide the necessary resources we expect for storm cover. We see SPIE as being able to add value in providing a quality electrical infrastructure for our customers.

Steven Nanda, SPIE UK's Industrial Services Managing Director, comments: "SPIE is privileged to be chosen by UK Power Networks for this scheme; we are acutely aware of the importance of the work to be undertaken and how vital it is to their customers. Our team is looking forward to fulfilling their role to the quality and safety standards expected within this contract and sharing their expertise and experience with UK Power Networks' other providers.
