Advanced Energy extends AC-DC family to 48V

Full-brick module simplifies design of next-generation telecom and industrial power architectures

Advanced Energy Industries has extended its Artesyn AIF family of intelligent, integrated and configurable full-brick AC-DC converters with the addition of a 48 V module. The AIF11WAC operates with best-in-class efficiencies up to 93 percent and delivers a small form factor solution for the latest 48 V power architectures in 5G remote-radio-head RF, robotics, 3D printing and industrial designs.

Rated for 500 W of continuous power and offering a wide 90 to 264 VAC input range, the AIF11WAC reduces system size and component count. Integrated PMBus control and monitoring as well as an intuitive GUI simplify power supply optimisation and enable ongoing system health measurements during operation. A fully encapsulated construction supports operation in high-pollution and harsh environments, as well as systems that require external mounting such as external signage, IP-sealed industrial automation systems, heavy industrial equipment that generates conductive dust and 5G telecom communication nodes.

“Telecom and industrial applications are transitioning to more efficient 48 V power architectures as customers look to deliver improved performance while keeping energy consumption low,” said Joe Voyles, vice president of marketing, industrial power conversion products at Advanced Energy. “This new addition to our family of highly integrated, high-efficiency full-brick AC-DC converters supports this evolution, reduces component count and simplifies application design.”

The AIF11WAC is designed for contact-cooled operation. It features an internal inrush limiting function that is matched to the hold-up function of the module, eliminating the need for external inrush current protection. Size and component count in the system can be further reduced thanks to a 10 V auxiliary output that enables low-power housekeeping circuitry to be supplied directly from the module rather than a second AC-DC power converter.

With no minimum load requirement, the module provides a regulated, isolated 48 V output for loads up to 11 A. The AIF11WAC incorporates active current share and start-sync functionality, which simplifies solutions implementation for applications that require two units to operate in parallel.
