Open Energi and Camborne Energy Storage partner to unlock value from batteries

News

Open Energi is working with Camborne Energy Storage (CES) to deliver revenues from CES's first co-located energy storage project. Open Energi's technology has been integrated with a 500kWh Tesla Powerpack to enable it to provide balancing services to National Grid. The battery energy storage system will automatically charge and discharge in response to second-by-second changes in electricity supply and demand UK-wide.

The system "“ which is co-located with a solar PV plant in Somerset "“ has the capacity to provide power for over 500 homes. In addition to generating revenue from balancing services it is also making money from time of use discharging; storing electricity generated during periods of low demand and releasing it when demand peaks.

Open Energi's Dynamic Demand technology optimises the system's operating profile to maximise revenue opportunities throughout the day, applying designed state of charge management techniques, while limiting the degradation of the battery lifetime to the lowest value possible.

David Hill, Strategy Director at Open Energi, commented: "Energy storage is helping the UK transition to a smarter, cleaner energy system, but there's more to unlocking value from it than putting a battery in a field. We're using the latest machine learning techniques to manage battery performance in real-time. By understanding and managing state of charge in relation to fluctuations in solar PV generation and changes in electricity supply and demand we can maximise revenues and minimise battery wear and tear."

CES is developing energy storage systems throughout the UK and starts 2017 with around 50 MW of consented sites ready for construction.

Dan Taylor, Managing Director at CES commented: "We have ambitious deployment targets for energy storage in the UK and this successful project is an exciting step forward for us and the industry. It demonstrates the vital role of energy storage in delivering secure, low carbon power to the UK. We are aiming to co-locate further energy storage with renewable generation throughout the UK and help make our electricity system fit for the future."
